It's quite likely that the 3d code is causing a crash at a specific point (i.e. drawing something the card doesn't like). You need to try and narrow down what is going wrong. If shadows are on, turn them off and see if the problem still persists. If you've some spare time you could set up gnu to play itself with a set starting random seed and see if it crashes. Then retry it and see if the crash happens at the same point and hopefully work out what is happening at that point.
