Thanks for the guess. I compiled gtk+-2.14.2 from source, and used no special options with configure. This led to the gnubg compilation error that I reported. I then uninstalled gtk+-2.14.2 and compiled the earlier version of gtk+ in precisely the same way. No gnubg compilation error.

I scanned the configure options for gtk+-2.14.2, but did not see anything related to dis/allowing deprecated functions. How would such an option be un/set if not in configure? I am somewhat of a novice regarding building unix software from source.
