I don't think that is the reason. Rather, it seems that you have no X server
running. Try typing
"xdpyinfo" I'm guessing you'll get the same error message - In fact you are
probably unable to
run any graphical programs?
You need to install and start an X server. I'm not a Mac user so I don't know
how to do this. You will have to ask a Mac expert.
