GNU Chess in Java?

Hi,

I found your e-mail in the readme file of GNU Chess 5.03. I would like to use the C code of the project to develop a Java (online) version of chess, for which of course I'll make source code publicly available under GNU terms. I'd like to know if someone else is already working on a similar project, and if there are any restrictions / objections to what I plan to do. Thanks in advance,
