This is indeed very strange, because I'm convinced I fixed it something
like 6 years ago. It works well in gcal-3.6.3, if compiled with
--enable-unicode (I think it should probably be made to be default; who
isn't using unicode nowadays anyway?). However, I just checked gcal-4
and it seems to have a regression. In fact I wasn't able to compile it
with --enable-unicode at all. I'm getting:

common.h:39:24: fatal error: unistdio.h: No such file or directory
Not quite sure how those packages are made, but this header is present
in gcal-3.6.3.
