Thank you.  I had run ./bootstrap.sh, but then did something else wrong, my 
recognition of which was prompted by this discussion.

Regarding the manual, it might be helpful to include the "run ./bootstrap.sh" 
instruction in the "Accessing The gawk Git Repository" section. Although the 
instruction does appear in the "Why Generated Files Are Kept In Git" section, 
that section appears mostly to be an essay explaining to other gawk developers 
how best to manage the repository, and it might not occur to readers who are 
not gawk developers that the "Why" section is relevant to them or that 
instructions important to them will be found there.

I do recognize the instruction is also in README.git, so those building from 
git should still find it there.
