Yes this is looking much better. I'm not fully convinced that we should also update the times, but not against it either.
This whole area is a mess, but the patch should improve correctness on macOS, while also being efficient in the usual case.
Yes it's a pity there is no fd (data) only interface for this, rather than dealing with names (metadata) too. thanks, Pádraig.
