I'm glad you like my patch. I did it as a quick hack to help me prepare
an image-intensive document. As far as I remember, for inclusion to
AUCTeX it would be necessary to rewrite the patch and make the code more
configurable. I have not found time to do it, but if you (or somebody
else) would devote the time to it I'd be happy to help. And of course,
I'd have no problems with copyright assignment to FSF.
