Have you tried adding an entry to `reftex-label-alist' as described in
the following manual entry?

This is just an idea, I haven't actually tried that.

On auctex-devel you already referenced a thread where a way to do this
was presented:

If it were implemented in RefTeX one could enable it in RefTeX only if
RefTeX is plugged into AUCTeX and the "refstyle" style is found.

A problem is that arbitrary label and reference commands can be created
by using \newref, possibly in a configuration file.  One could provide
support for the default set defined by refstyle.cfg and a possibility to
adapt this support on a case by case basis.

Having said that, I'd consider a clean support for refstyle.sty rather
difficult to implement.  But perhaps I am just dull because I don't have
much time to think about it at the moment.
