You need to check out MAS please. 
The UNIX way has always to be to seperate the technology into different parts. 
It makes sense too, because for example the sound server could be disabled 
with a quick killall, while in order to disable sound in X and save the 
memory etc one would have to use the X specific APIs.

And why would the sound server need to be in X? I believe aRts is network 
transparent (or one of lthe currently available sound servers). And if none 
are, then MAS *is*.
