What API you're talking about ? libx + friends ?
Their interface of course _must_ stay the same. If we really someday
write an complete new client library, this one has to coexist with
libx, and maybe libx will be an wrapper for the new one.
If you're talking about the X protocol - well, if really necessary,
we could introduce an complete new one. The Xouvert server then speaks
multiple display protocols.
Putting both together: the new client library also speaks all protocols
and negotiates the right one with the server or fetches it from some
configfile or env-var. The old libx interface then will be provided
by an small wrapper lib.
