In some distant future I will switch to the XDIF format for the logs.
I look forward to that. For now, this works well (better all the time as I learn the 'hidden' features.
xlog supports STX, RTX, SRX_STRING and STX_STRING out of the box. if your RST field contains 599060, ADIF export will have "<RST_SENT:3>599 <STX:3>060". If the exchange field does not contain numbers, STX_STRING will be used.
It makes sense to put the contest exchange there now that I have learned that tip. Before I was lost on how to do it since I don't have a history with ham contesting software.
I've searched the archives and found one note that tlf may be the way to go for HF contests
I don't 'get' tlf yet. Since I've proved the xlog tool and am not very fast anyway, I used it for the little time I spent on the 7QP (http://www.7qp.org/). It worked great. Since the exchange is fairly fixed, I set a default value for RST (59UTCAC) and each time I hit ctrl-k, I was almost ready to hit ctrl-a.
After the contest I exported to my first cabrillo file. After some minor tweaks it was ready to email in. The exchanges split oddly more often than not. Here's a snip from the log that shows it going back and forth.

This seems similar to the issue posted here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/xlog-discussion/2004-02/msg00016.html -- Jacob / kd7yko
