En la página que estoy traduciendo,
https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/proprietary-insecurity.html,

* (slang) A swindle or fraud
* (Law) (slang) A trap set up by the police to entice a person to
commit a crime and thereby produce evidence
* (slang) An ostensibly illegal operation, as the buying of stolen
goods, used by undercover investigators to collect evidence of wrongdoing.
* (slang) To cheat or take advantage of, esp. to overcharge; soak.

Comentarios de rms:

* «I think the core of this meaning of "sting" is tricking people,
luring them into a trap.»

* «Note that "sting" and "trap" are not synonyms. A sting is a kind of
trap, one that works via a devious and manipulative trick.
Thus, not all traps are stings.»

Las posibilidades de traducción son varias. Tenemos para pensar.
