-<h2>Ed Tech Corporations Against Software Freedom</h2>
-
-<div class="article">
-
-<p>Tech corporations&nbsp;<a href="#note1" id="note1-rev">[1]</a> are taking
-over the field of education by pushing their proprietary products into
-educational institutions of all levels. Proprietary applications loaded with
-malicious functionalities such as surveillance and collection of sensitive
-personal data&mdash;among many others&mdash;are being imposed on schools'
-staff, teachers, students, and even parents. With the rapid expansion of
-online teaching, these proprietary educational technologies not only spread
-dramatically across schools, but they went from the classroom to the home.</p>
-
-<p>Proprietary video conferencing software&mdash;as well as other programs
-used for communications between students and teachers, and some nonfree
-educational resources&mdash;are tethered to online dis-services that
-collect large amounts of personal data. The school may have to agree to
-the company's unjust terms of dis-service. The school, in turn, will
-typically force students to create an account on the dis-service, which
-includes agreeing to the terms.</p>
-
-<p>Nonfree Ed Tech fails to assist the learning process by forbidding
-students to study the programs they are required to use, thus opposing
-the very <a href="/education/edu-schools.html">nature and purpose of
-education</a>. It does not allow school administrators and teachers to
-safeguard students' rights by forbidding them to inspect the source code
-of the programs they run&nbsp;<a href="#note2" id="note2-rev">[2]</a>. It
-does not enable parents to make sure their children are protected from
-surveillance, data collection, and other mistreatment by the owner of the
-proprietary program.</p>
-
-<p>This is not to say that educational technology is a bad approach <i>per
-se</i>. The problem arises when the software used in Ed Tech is nonfree,
-meaning it denies students the rights that <a
-href="/philosophy/free-sw.html#four-freedoms">free software</a> grants
-all users.</p>

-<h2>Educational Free Software</h2>
-
-<p><em>The GNU project maintains a
-<a href="/software/free-software-for-education.html">list of high
-quality free programs for education at all levels</a> that we
-recommend.</em></p>
-
-<div class="important">
-<p>Before addressing the subject in this section, we would like to
-remind our readers that the word &ldquo;free&rdquo; in &ldquo;free
-software&rdquo; <strong>does
-not refer to price</strong> but to <strong>liberty</strong>. Free
-software is software that grants you <strong>freedom</strong>, namely
-the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the
-software. To learn more, see the <a href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">
-free software definition</a>.</p>
-</div>
-
-
-<h3>What you will find in this section</h3>
-
-<p>This page does not constitute an exhaustive listing of available
-educational free programs. Our aim is to present some examples so as to
-illustrate how educational institutions can put into practice and
-effectively apply the freedoms that free software grants them. For each
-program described, we will show how those freedoms were actually
-applied.</p>
-
-<p>The following are the examples that we present:</p>
-
-<!-- begin adding programs in alphabetical order -->
-<div class="toc-inline">

-</p>
-</div>
-<!-- end adding programs -->
-
-<p>Some of the programs presented here, like GCompris, are part of the
-GNU Project. This means that developers of these programs agree to pay
-attention to making the program work well with the rest of the
-GNU System. A GNU program uses the latest version of the license that
-the GNU Project recommends in order to protect the users' fundamental
-freedoms. A GNU program does not recommend the use of any nonfree
-program, and it does not refer the user to any nonfree documentation
-for free software, as defined in our campaign for
-<a href="/philosophy/free-doc.html">free documentation</a>.</p>
-
-<p>People who wish to migrate to free software or are looking for a free
-libre program to accomplish a particular task, should refer to the
-<a href="http://directory.fsf.org";>Free Software Directory</a>, which
-consists of a catalog of more than 6,000 free programs that run on
-<a href="/distros/free-distros.html">free operating
-systems</a>. In particular, the
-<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/category/educ/";>Education</a> section
-of the Directory lists programs inherent to different levels of
-education, from pre-elementary school to highly specialized levels,
-including university and research.</p>
-
-<p>If you know of a free software program that is being used by an
-educational institution for specific purposes, or has been modified or
-otherwise adapted by its users to meet their own educational needs,

-<h2>Educational Malware App &ldquo;Along&rdquo;</h2>
-
-<div class="article">
-
-<p>The nonfree <a
-href="https://nepc.colorado.edu/sites/default/files/publications/Newsletter%20along.pdf";>
-&ldquo;education&rdquo; app Along</a>, developed by a company controlled
-by Zuckerberg, encourages students to use it for private conversations
-with their teachers. Some of the personal data it collects is
-<em>very</em> sensitive. The company grants itself the power to sell
-&ldquo;anonymized&rdquo; data from which, in spite of
-&ldquo;anonymization,&rdquo; it will be possible to identify many of the
-students, perhaps most. In fact, research shows that in most cases
-anonymization can be easily undone and data tracked back to identify
-individuals uniquely.</p>
-
-<blockquote>
-<p><i>&ldquo;Computer scientists have recently undermined our faith in
-the privacyprotecting power of anonymization, the name for techniques
-that protect the privacy of individuals in large databases by deleting
-information like names and social security numbers. These scientists
-have demonstrated that they can often &lsquo;reidentify&rsquo; or
-&lsquo;deanonymize&rsquo; individuals hidden in anonymized data with
-astonishing ease.&rdquo;</i> &mdash;From <a
-href="https://www.uclalawreview.org/pdf/57-6-3.pdf";><cite>Broken
-Promises of Privacy: Responding to the Surprising Failure of
-Anonymization</cite></a>, by Prof. Paul Ohm. UCLA Law Review, 2010. 57,
-1701-1777.</p>
-</blockquote>
-
-<p>Ohm's paper provides examples of how computer scientists were able to
-identify people from supposedly anonymized databases, while suggesting
-that the existing privacy legislation is unsuitable to properly
-protect collected data. We hold that data should not be collected in
-the first place and, above all, education should not marketized.</p>
-
-<p>The Along app invites teachers to <a
-href="https://kappanonline.org/dont-go-along-with-corporate-schemes-to-gather-up-student-data/";>
-record personal questions</a> on video and ask the student to respond
-with an audio or video recording. Through this process, the app
-systematically guides teachers to ask students about matters of interest
-for Facebook and other profilers that would be willing to buy the
-resulting data.</p>
-
-<p>Leading students to &ldquo;open up&rdquo; to teachers about things
-unrelated to school activities may mean putting them in danger, because
-parents and school administrators also are allowed to see students'
-replies, as well as teachers themselves. This becomes more ominous in
-the light of repressive laws in some US states. If a student in Texas
-tells the school, &ldquo;I am taking a puberty blocker&rdquo;
-or &ldquo;I'm so glad mom gave me money to travel to New Mexico for an
-abortion,&rdquo; an administrator or a teacher who hears this could sue
-the parents or try to get the state to take their children away. They
-may even be legally required to do so.</p>
-
-<p>The risk also exists that some students will be punished by their
-parents for things they revealed during the interview.</p>

-- GNU Project - Free Software Foundation</title>
-<!--#include virtual="/server/gnun/initial-translations-list.html" -->
-<!--#include virtual="/server/banner.html" -->
-<div class="article reduced-width">
-<h2>Richard Stallman at the First Hackers Conference in 1984</h2>
-<div class="thin"></div>
-
-<p>The first Hackers Conference was held in Sausalito, California, in
-November 1984. The makers of the documentary <cite>Hackers: Wizards of
-the Electronic Age</cite> interviewed Richard Stallman at the event.
-They included only parts of the interviews in the film, but made some
-other footage available. Stallman's statements at the conference went
-beyond what he had written in the <a
-href="/gnu/initial-announcement.html">initial announcement of GNU</a>.</p>
-
-<p>It was at this conference that Richard Stallman first publicly and
-explicitly stated the idea that <em>all software should be free</em>,
-and makes it clear that &ldquo;free&rdquo; refers to freedom, not price,
-by saying that software should be <em>freely</em> accessible to
-everyone. This was probably the first time he made that distinction to
-the public.</p>
-
-<p>Stallman continues by explaining why it is wrong to agree to accept a
-program on condition of not sharing it with others. So what can one
-say about a business based on developing nonfree software and luring
-others into accepting that condition? Such things are bad for society
-and shouldn't be done at all. (In later years he used stronger
-condemnation.)</p>
-
-<p>Here are the things he said:</p>
-
-<!-- All links below work both with and without JS at the time of writing -->
-
- <blockquote>
- <p><i>&ldquo; My project is to make all software free.&rdquo;</i>
- <a
-
href="https://web.archive.org/web/20220511132116/https://www.freespeechtube.org/v/10fl";>
- Video</a> (0:00 - 0:03)</p>
-
- </blockquote>
-
- <blockquote>
- <p><i>&ldquo;If I'm offered a chance to use a piece of software
- provided I would agree not to share it with anyone, I feel that it
- would be wrong, it would spiritually hurt me to agree. So I don't want
- them investing in software that's owned. And I don't believe that
- anything is justified to encourage them to invest in software that's
- owned. I think the really great software has been done by hackers who
- were doing it because they loved it, because it was playful
- cleverness, and that will continue in any case. I think there are
- alternative ways of arranging for some amount of money to go into
- paying salaries of people, paying them to spend their time writing
- programs. If people want certain kinds of programs to be written, they
- can come up with other forms of organization&mdash;I can suggest a
- few&mdash;but the important thing is there are lots of alternative
- ways of doing things. This one has been chosen because it gets the
- people investing in software companies the most profits of any of the
- available ways.&rdquo;</i>
- <a
-
href="https://web.archive.org/web/20161107235202/https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/video/at-the-first-hackers-conference-in-1984-richard-stallman-news-footage/146485179";>Video</a></p>

- </blockquote>
-
- <blockquote>
- <p><i>&ldquo;I don't think it's a social imperative to give them the
- most possible profit. I think the social imperative is that
- information that's developed should be accessible to everyone as freely
- as possible. If we look at the principle underlying&mdash;the incentive
- principle, give people incentives to do the things you wish to
- encourage&mdash;and then we say, &lsquo;what are we giving people
- incentives for?&rsquo; we see that we are not giving them any
- incentives to do the things that benefit society most. If a person has
- a choice, he can write a program and then encourage everyone to use it
- in any way that's good for him or he can write the program and then
- market it hoarding the plans, telling people they are not allowed to
- share it with their neighbors, being very obnoxious and obstructive.
- We see he has an incentive to be obnoxious and obstructive, he doesn't
- have an incentive to cooperate. I think that's sick, I think that's a
- bad social organization, because we are encouraging most what's not
- good for us.&rdquo;</i>
- <a
-
href="https://web.archive.org/web/20161108001731/https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/video/at-the-first-hackers-conference-in-1984-richard-stallman-news-footage/146484701";>Video</a></p>

- </blockquote>
-
- <blockquote>
- <p><i>&ldquo;Imagine if you bought a house and the basement was locked
- and only the original building contractor had the key. If you needed
- to make any change, repair anything, you'd have to go to him, and if
- he was too busy doing something else he'd tell you to get lost and
- you'd be stuck. You are at that person's mercy and you become
- downtrodden and resigned. That's what happens when the blueprints to a
- computer program are kept secret by the organization that sells it.
- That's the usual way things are done.&rdquo;</i>

-
-<h3 id="intro">Introduction</h3>
-
-<p>This page lists the <a href="/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html">GNU/Linux</a>
-distributions that are
-entirely <a href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">free</a> as in freedom.
-<a href="/distros/free-non-gnu-distros.html">Non-GNU-based
-free system distributions</a> are listed separately.</p>
-
-<p>The Free Software Foundation recommends and endorses these GNU/Linux
-distros, although <strong>we do not try to judge or compare them based on any
-criterion other than freedom</strong>; therefore, we list them in alphabetical
-order.</p>
-
-<p>These distros are ready-to-use full systems whose developers have made
-a commitment to follow the
-<a href="/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html">Guidelines
-for Free System Distributions</a>. This means they will
-include, and propose, exclusively free software. They will reject
-nonfree applications, nonfree programming platforms, nonfree drivers,
-nonfree firmware &ldquo;blobs&rdquo;, nonfree games, and any other
-nonfree software, as well as nonfree manuals or documentation.</p>
-
-<p>If one of these distros ever does include or propose anything nonfree,
-that must have happened by mistake, and the developers are committed to
-removing it. If you find nonfree software or documentation in one of
-these distributions, you can
-<a href="/help/gnu-bucks.html">report the problem, and earn GNU Bucks</a>,
-while we inform the developers so they can fix the problem.</p>
-
-<p>Fixing freedom bugs is an ethical requirement for listing a distro
-here; therefore, we list only distros with a development team that has
-told us it will remove any nonfree software that might be found in
-them. Usually the team consists of volunteers, and they don't make
-legally binding commitments to users; but if we find out a distro is
-not properly maintained, we will de-list it.</p>
-
-<p>We hope the other existing GNU/Linux distributions will become
-entirely free software so that we can list them here. If you wish to
-improve the state of free distros, helping to develop an existing free
-distro contributes more than starting a new one.</p>
-
-<p>Please note that not all hardware works in the free world; each
-distro's site should say which hardware it supports. We suggest that,
-after reading the short descriptions below, you consult these sites as
-well as other available information, to judge which distro is most
-convenient for you.</p>

-
-<p>In addition to their own sites, many of these distributions are
-available from <a href="http://mirror.fsf.org/";>mirror.fsf.org</a>.
-Feel free to download or mirror the distributions from there,
-preferably using rsync. Free distribution maintainers can request a

-you think it qualifies for a listing under our guidelines, then please
-let the distribution's maintainers know about this page and encourage
-them to get in touch&mdash;we'd like to hear from them.</p>
-
-<p>If you maintain a distribution that follows the <a

-<h2>Free Software for Education</h2>
-
-<p>Here are two lists of high-quality free/libre software applications
-that can be used in schools and educational institutions of all
-levels. The first one is a list of free/libre programs along with the
-popular proprietary (nonfree) applications they replace. The second
-one contains free/libre programs that do not necessarily replace a
-proprietary counterpart but can be very useful to students and
-teachers.</p>
-
-<p>When we say these programs are free/libre, we mean they are
-released under a license that grants all users <a
-href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">four essential freedoms</a>: the
-freedoms to run, study, copy, modify and redistribute the program so
-as to contribute to the community. It does not necessarly mean zero
-price, although almost all these programs are gratis. This is a
-secondary additional benefit that schools may take into
-consideration.</p>
-
-<p>Everyone should use free software, because only free software gives
-users the freedom that lets them control their own computers.
-Proprietary programs put the users under the power of the software
-developers. However, there are <a
-href="/education/edu-schools.html">specific ethical reasons</a> that
-apply to education.</p>
-
-<p>In addition to the wrong of nonfree software, the use of
-third-party network services in schools poses yet another problem: <a
-href="https://www.eff.org/press/releases/google-deceptively-tracks-students-internet-browsing-eff-says-complaint-federal-trade";>
-the collection of students' (and teachers') personal data by
-companies</a>. But even if the school never uses those services, one
-cannot be sure that the nonfree programs are not sending personal data
-<em>somewhere</em>. In fact, the source code of proprietary programs
-(with a few exceptions) is secret, so users can't know what the
-software is really doing.</p>

-<h2>What is the Free Software Movement?</h2>
-
-<p>The free software movement campaigns to win for the users of
-computing the freedom that comes from free software. Free software
-puts its users in control of their own computing. Nonfree software
-puts its users under the power of the software's developer. See
-<a
href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/rms/20140407-geneva-tedx-talk-free-software-free-society";>
-the video explanation</a>.</p>
-
-<h2>What is Free Software?</h2>
-
-<p><strong>Free software means the users have the freedom to run,
-copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.</strong></p>
-
-<p>Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the
-concept, you should think of &ldquo;free&rdquo; as in &ldquo;free
-speech&rdquo;, not as in &ldquo;free beer&rdquo;.</p>
-
-<p>More precisely, free software means users of a program have
-the <a href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">four essential
-freedoms</a>:</p>
-
-<ul>
-<li>The freedom to run the program as you wish,
- for any purpose (freedom 0).</li>
-<li>The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it
- does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source
- code is a precondition for this.</li>
-<li>The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others
- (freedom 2).</li>
-<li>The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions
- to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole
- community a chance to benefit from your changes.
- Access to the source code is a precondition for this.</li>
-</ul>
-
-<p>Developments in technology and network use have made these freedoms
-<a href="/philosophy/free-software-even-more-important.html">even more
-important now</a> than they were in 1983.</p>
-
-<p>Nowadays the free software movement goes far beyond developing the
-GNU system. See <a href="https://www.fsf.org";>the Free Software
-Foundation's web site</a> for more about what we do, and a list
-of <a href="/help">ways you can help</a>.</p>
-
-<h2>More about GNU</h2>
-
-<p><a id="More-GNU">GNU</a> is a Unix-like operating system. That
-means it is a collection of many programs: applications, libraries,
-developer tools, even games. The development of GNU, started in
-January 1984, is known as the GNU Project. Many of the programs in
-GNU are released under the auspices of the GNU Project; those we
-call <a href="/software/">GNU packages</a>.</p>
-
-<p>The name &ldquo;GNU&rdquo; is a recursive acronym for &ldquo;GNU's
-Not
-Unix.&rdquo; <a href="/pronunciation/pronunciation.html">&ldquo;GNU&rdquo;
-is pronounced <em>g'noo</em></a>, as one syllable, like saying
-&ldquo;grew&rdquo; but replacing the <em>r</em> with <em>n</em>.</p>
-
-<p>The program in a Unix-like system that allocates machine resources
-and talks to the hardware is called the &ldquo;kernel&rdquo;. GNU is
-typically used with a kernel called Linux. This combination is
-the <a href="/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html"><strong>GNU/Linux operating
-system</strong></a>. GNU/Linux is used by millions, though
-many <a href="/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html">call it &ldquo;Linux&rdquo; by
-mistake</a>.</p>
-
-<p>GNU's own kernel, the <a href="/software/hurd/hurd.html">GNU Hurd</a>,
-was started in 1990 (before Linux was started). Volunteers continue
-developing the Hurd because it is an interesting technical
-project.</p>
