+<p>The Education Team was initially created to carry out the task of
+building a section within the gnu.org website to specifically address
+the importance of using Free Software in the education field. We believe
+that the achievements of the <a href="/gnu/the-gnu-project.html">GNU
+Project</a> must be applied to all areas of education if they are to
+have an effective positive influence on society as a whole.</p>

+<p>The Team provides an answer to the need for a comprehensive
+approach to the adoption of <a href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">
+Free Software</a> by educational institutions. Along with technical
+support and availability of adequate free educational software, an
+improved understanding of the fundamentals of the
+<a href="/philosophy/philosophy.html">GNU philosophy</a> will
+significantly aid the decisional process at times when schools and
+universities are considering the possibility of installing or migrating
+to Free Software. For this reason, we aim at emphasizing the importance
+of the ethical principles of Free Software since they are in line with
+the goals of educational institutions of all levels. This approach will
+ensure success and effectiveness of the migration experience over time.
+Raising awareness about these principles is the main goal of our
+Team.</p>

+<p>These are the main reasons why universities and schools of all
+levels should use exclusively Free Software.</p>
+
+<h3>Sharing</h3>
+
+<p>Schools should teach the value of sharing by setting an example. Free
+software supports education by allowing the sharing of knowledge and
+tools:</p>
+
+<ul>
+<li><strong>Knowledge</strong>. Many young students have a talent for
+programing; they are fascinated with computers and eager to learn how their
+systems work. With proprietary software, this information is a secret so
+teachers have no way of making it available to their students. But if it is
+Free Software, the teacher can explain the basic subject and then hand out
+the source code for the student to read and learn.</li>
+</ul>

+<ul>
+<li><strong>Tools</strong>. Teachers can hand out to students copies of the
+programs they use in the classroom so that they can use them at home. With
+Free Software, copying is not only authorized, it is encouraged.</li>
+</ul>

+<h3>Social Responsibility</h3>
+
+<p>Computing has become an essential part of everyday life. Digital
+technology is transforming society very quickly, and schools have an
+influence on the future of society. Their mission is to get students
+ready to participate in a free digital society by teaching them the
+skills to make it easy for them to take control of their own lives.
+Software should not be under the power of a software developer who
+unilaterally makes decisions that nobody else can change. Educational
+institutions should not allow proprietary software companies to impose
+their power on the rest of society and its future.</p>
+
+<h3>Independence</h3>
+
+<p>Schools have an ethical responsibility to teach strength, not dependency
+on a single product or a specific powerful company. Furthermore, by
+choosing to use Free Software, the school itself gains independence from
+any commercial interests and it avoids vendor lock-in.</p>
+
+<ul>
+<li>Proprietary software companies use schools and universities as a
+springboard to reach users and thus impose their software on society as
+a whole. They offer discounts, or even gratis copies of their proprietary
+programs to educational institutions, so that students will learn to use
+them and become dependent on them. After these students graduate, neither
+they nor their future employers will be offered discounted copies.
+Essentially, what these companies are doing is they are recruiting schools
+and universities into agents to lead people to permanent lifelong
+dependency.</li>

+<li>Free software licenses do not expire, which means that once Free
+Software is adopted, institutions remain independent from the vendor.
+Moreover, Free Software licenses grant users the rights not only to
+use the software as they wish, to copy it and distribute it, but also
+to modify it in order to meet their own needs. Therefore, if
+institutions eventually wish to implement a particular function in a
+piece of software, they can engage the services of any developer to
+accomplish the task, independently from the original vendor.</li>

+<h3>Learning</h3>
+
+<p>When deciding where they will study, more and more students are
+considering whether a university teaches computer science and software
+development using Free Software. Free software means that students are
+free to study how the programs work and to learn how to adapt them for
+their own needs. Learning about Free Software also helps in studying
+software development ethics and professional practice.</p>
+
+<h3>Saving</h3>
+
+<p>This is an obvious advantage that will appeal immediately to many school
+administrators, but it is a marginal benefit. The main point of this
+aspect is that by being authorized to distribute copies of the programs
+at little or no cost, schools can actually aid families facing financial
+issues, thus promoting fairness and equal opportunities of learning
+among students.</p>
+
+<h3>Quality</h3>
+
+<p>Stable, secure and easily installed Free Software solutions are
+available for education already. In any case, excellence of performance
+is a secondary benefit; the ultimate goal is freedom for computer users.</p>

+<p>Bill Gates discussed patents with CNET under the heading of
+“<a href="/philosophy/not-ipr.html">intellectual
+property</a>,” a term that covers many disparate
+laws. He said anyone who won't give blanket support to all these laws
+is a Communist. Since I'm not a Communist but I have criticized
+software patents, I got to thinking this calumny might be aimed at
+me.</p>
+
+<p>The term “intellectual property” is too broad to have
+one opinion about. It lumps together copyright law, patent law, and
+various other laws, whose requirements and effects are entirely
+different. So anyone using the term “intellectual
+property” is typically either confused himself, or trying to
+confuse you. Why does Mr. Gates lump these issues together? Let's
+study the differences he sets aside.</p>
+
+<p>Software developers are not up in arms against copyright law,
+because the developer of a program holds the copyright on the program;
+as long as the programmers wrote the code themselves, no one else has
+a copyright on their code. There is no danger that strangers could
+have a valid case of copyright infringement against them.</p>
+
+<p>Patents are a different story. Software patents don't cover
+programs or code; they cover ideas (methods, techniques, features,
+algorithms, etc.). Developing a large program entails combining
+thousands of ideas, and even if a few of them are new, the rest must
+necessarily have come from other sources, such as programs the
+developer has seen. If each of these ideas could be patented by
+someone, every large program is likely to infringe hundreds of
+patents. Developing a large program means laying oneself open to
+hundreds of potential lawsuits. Software patents are a menace to
+software developers, and to the users. Since patent law covers
+execution of the program, the users can also be sued.</p>
+
+<p>A few fortunate software developers avoid most of the danger.
+These are the megacorporations, which typically have thousands of
+patents each, and cross-license with each other. This gives them an
+advantage over smaller rivals not in a position to do likewise.
+That's why it is generally the megacorporations that lobby for
+software patents.</p>
+
+<p>Today's Microsoft is a megacorporation with thousands of patents.
+Microsoft said in court that the main competition for MS Windows is
+“Linux,” meaning the free software GNU/Linux operating
+system. Leaked internal documents say that Microsoft aims to use
+software patents to stop the development of GNU/Linux.</p>
+
+<p>When Mr. Gates started hyping his solution to the problem of spam,
+I suspected this was a plan to use patents to grab control of the net.
+Sure enough, in 2004 Microsoft asked the IETF to approve a mail
+protocol that Microsoft was trying to patent. The patent license
+policy for this protocol was written to forbid free software entirely.
+No program supporting this mail protocol could be released as free
+software—not under the GNU GPL, or the MPL, or the Apache
+license, or any other.</p>
+
+<p>The IETF rejected Microsoft's protocol, but Microsoft said it would
+try to convince major ISPs to use it anyway. Thanks to Mr. Gates, we
+now know that an open Internet with protocols anyone can implement is
+Communism; it was set up by that famous Communist agent, the US
+Department of Defense.</p>
+
+<p>With Microsoft's market clout, it can impose its choice of
+programming system as a de-facto standard. Microsoft has already
+patented some .NET implementation methods, raising the concern that
+millions of users have been shifted to a government-issued Microsoft
+monopoly.</p>
+
+<p>But Capitalism means monopoly; at least, Gates-style Capitalism
+does. People who think that everyone should be free to program, free
+to write complex software, they are Communists, says Mr. Gates. But
+these Communists have infiltrated even the Microsoft boardroom.
+Here's what Bill Gates told Microsoft employees in 1991:</p>
+

+most of today's ideas were invented and had taken out patents, the
+industry would be at a complete stand-still today...A future start-up
+with no patents of its own will be forced to pay whatever price the
+giants choose to impose.”</p>

+<p>Mr. Gates' secret is out now—he too was a
+“Communist,” he too recognized that software patents were
+harmful, until Microsoft became one of these giants. Now Microsoft
+aims to use software patents to impose whatever price it chooses on
+you and me. And if we object, Mr. Gates will call us
+“Communists.”</p>
+
