+<p>GCompris is a cross-platform complete educational suite for children
+from 2 to 10 years old, and it is part of the GNU project. It includes
+more than 40 entertaining activities that help little kids learn skills
+such as the recognition of letters and numbers, the use of the mouse and
+keyboard, basic algebra training, reading time on an analog clock, vector
+drawing, language learning through games, and much more. The program
+includes a simple text processor to produce documents with basic text
+style. Another feature is the animation tool, which can be employed as a
+simple and effective method to support story telling, thus improving
+communication with children and helping them to express themselves.</p>
+
+<p>Each activity in GCompris is a "board". Boards are placed in a central
+location to the left of the screen from which the child can choose when
+the program is started. The design based on boards makes it easy to add
+new activities or to adapt the program to specific needs. The program
+itself and all boards are available in many different languages.</p>
+

+<h3>Who's Using It</h3>
+
+GCompris is used by a large number of schools around the world with
+excellent results. It is interesting reading the many
+<a href="http://gcompris.net/-Schools-using-it-";>comments and
+testimonies</a> submitted by teachers of all grades who are using the
+program.
+
+<p>Being Free Software and with a board-based design, GCompris is highly
+and easily adaptable to particular environments. One example of this use
+is the work done by the <a href="http://insight.kerala.gov.in/";>Insight
+Project</a> of Kerala, in India. The project is using
+and adapting the program to develop resources for children and proposing
+an innovative usage of GCompris to support the development of cognitive
+and motor skills of autistic children. The Insight project also
+releases material for parents and special educators to help them
+understand how to use the software and how to utilize it to communicate
+with their children.</p>
+
+<h3>Motivation</h3>
+Teachers report that it is extremely easy for them to implement
+GCompris in their curriculum since children find it intuitive and fun
+to use. The program is also an excellent resource for mentally
+challenged older children or adults.
+
+<p>In the case of the implementation by the Insight Project, it is
+important to note that generally in India the only chance of a child
+of getting accustomed with computers is during school time. The machines
+are often shared and children have limited time to access them
+individually. GCompris is particularly useful in this environment
+because there is practically no time spent on getting to understand how
+the program works. Easy to use and intuitive, children develop quickly
+the motor skills required to use a computer. GCompris has become an
+important resource to speed up the child's learning process.</p>
+
+<h3>How It is Used</h3>
+
+The Insight team implemented a training module for teachers that
+provides instruction on how to use the different activities of GCompris
+when working with children with special needs, to help these children
+acquire abilities such as eye-hand coordination, memory, listening, and
+improving the child's attention span. The module addresses different
+levels of education, from pre-school to the primary level.
+
+<p>Gcompris is also used to help older children understand the
+relationship between numbers, learn basic arithmetic operations, train
+them in analytical reasoning, and to improve communicative skills as
+well as spelling, reading and writing.</p>
+
+<h3>Results</h3>
+GCompris respects the users' fundamental freedoms and this permitted
+the Insight developers and specialists to adapt the software to the
+children's needs, creating new activities and boards, and proposing the
+innovative use of the program to help autistic children and their
+parents. Teachers and parents were happy to note that this program is
+effective in improving the academic and functional flair of an
+intellectually challenged child.

+remind our readers that the word "Free" in "Free Software" <strong>does
+not refer to price</strong> but to <strong>liberty</strong>. Free
+Software is software that grants you <strong>freedom</strong>, namely
+the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the
+software. To learn more, see the <a href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">

+<p>In these pages we present some examples to illustrate how the
+freedoms that Free Software grants to all users have been put into
+practice and effectively applied to improve the teaching and learning
+processes.</p>
+

+educational institution for specific purposes, or has been modified or
otherwise adapted by its users to meet their own educational needs, please let

+<p>This pages do not constitute an exhaustive listing of available Free
+educational programs. People who wish to migrate to Free Software or are
+looking for a Free Libre program to accomplish a particular task, should
+refer to the <a href="http://directory.fsf.org";>Free Software
+Directory</a>, which consists of a catalog of more than 6,700 Free
+programs that run on <a href="http://gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html";>
+free operating systems</a>. In particular, the
+<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/category/educ/";>Education</a> section
+of the Directory lists programs inherent to different levels of
+education, from pre-elementary school to highly specialized levels,
+including university and research.</p>
+
+<p>Some of the programs presented here, like Gcompris, are part of the
+GNU Project. This means that developers of these programs agree to pay
+attention to making the program work well with the rest of the
+<a href="http://gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html";>GNU system</a>. A GNU
+program uses the latest version of the license that the GNU Project
+recomends in order to protect the users' fundamental freedoms. A GNU
+program does not recommend the use of any non-free program, and it does
+not refer the user to any non-free documentation for Free Software, as
+defined in our campaign for
