"Historically the SvPV macro with the global variable PL_na has been used in
this case. But that can be quite inefficient because PL_na must be accessed in
thread-local storage in threaded Perl."

I don't what year this macro was introduced, but I did find this Google hit
"workaround for missing SvPV_nolen()" dated 2002, so I think it must have been
added some time prior to that date.
