Java has Jini. You ask a Jini server what services are available. If you want 
to use a service, Jini provides you with an RMI proxy object which you use 
when you use the service.

.NET uses UDDI, which is a fairly new Service Discovery thingy. I suppose it 
works similar to Jini. Both Jini and UDDI are centralized, there is a server 
that you can ask what services are available. I'm not sure if there are any 
p2p Service Discovery thingys. Maybe Globus has something...
