oh, i assumed it had been there for a long time.  i just never
use selections (to the extent i should really unbind 'q', because
i hit it by accident fairly often), so probably wasn't paying attention.

(this also means i don't have a vested interested in the default
binding of the "get out of selection mode" keystroke.  :-)
