And this is sent back from the remote host. Looks like a wrong password,
maybe saved in yout .authinfo file, or so.

Could you pls try the following command from a local shell:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
# sudo -u root -s -H -p P""a""s""s""w""o""r""d"": /bin/sh
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Make sure to enter the proper password, and see whether it works. If
yes, start Emacs again via "emacs -Q", and try to open /sudo::
Make sure to enter the proper password.
