Oops! I had an old copy on disk.
with https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tramp/tramp-2.4.0.tar.gz
all is fine!

Maybe add a file "VERSION" containing the version number,
so users can figure it out at a glance, if the directory name they used
no longer contains the version number.
