Yes, the files are returned horizontally. And the "-al" argument is ignored.
What happens on your remote machine, if you call

# /bin/ls --color=never -al /u/autobahn/scripts/.

Is there an error? How shall we reorganize the ls arguments in order to
get the requested listing?
