I see the same problem.  Here are my versions:

  w3m-version's value is "w3m/0.3.2.2"
  emacs-w3m-version's value is "1.4.0.58"
  tramp-version's value is "2.1.0"
  emacs-version's value is "21.3.1"

Older Emacs and w3m, but latest emacs-w3m and tramp from anoncvs.
