This issue is on my list. Long ago, this had a penalty both regarding 
performance and
memory usage. Currently, we do not have to worry about memory usage anymore and
with TeXmacs getting more and more modern, it will actually enhance performance.
So this is definitely going to come at a certain point.

No, the issue is far more complex, because of a delicate behaviour regarding
cursor positioning and deletions. Another subtle point concerns upgrading
old documents towards this more structured behaviour. As to the brackets,
the French interval notation, e.g. ]a,b], may be a source of problems.
