Yes, I agree with the usefulness of such an operation.

Yes, it should actually be quite simple.
However, as often, the solution is deemed to be temporary.

Yes, I don't understand this either. I found no documentation about
the pk  format when I needed it, so I adapted a program from the TeX
distribution. That is also the origin of the bug...
