To follow up on myself.
The specification for PostScript DSC (Document Structuring Conventions)
can be found at:

(which is a great PostScript resource) or more exactly:
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/pdfs/tn/5001.DSC_Spec.pdf
According to it the %%Page command has the syntax
%%Page: label ordinal
where label is the name of the page and ordinal is its sequential number.
