Can you get the binary package of GCC that we distribute working?
That includes the GNU linker that is needed to create shared libraries,
which is needed for Java (it also greatly expedites model builds). Further,
that GCC package fixes an Objective C compiler bug that, while not fatal,
is annoying.
If you can't get the binary package working, and can't convince your
sysadmin to upgrade to Solaris 2.7, then you'll want a build of GNU binutils
and GCC with a compiler patched per:
ftp://ftp.swarm.org/pub/swarm/src/needed/diffs/gcc-objc.diff
These builds are a hassle if you haven't done them before, so try
the binary packages first.
