Business Process Modeling: Macro and Micro Level Solutions

A book edited by Dr. Kristina Risom Jespersen, Aarhus School of Business, Denmark

Introduction

In business processes, decision-makers exhibit bounded rationality and base their decisions on imperfect information. They learn and they have their own rules. Industry and company behavior is the aggregated behavior that emerges as a consequence of the interactions of these individual behaviors. These dynamics of a knowledge-based economy leaves researchers with a need for methodological tools that can deal with the complexity of business processes, technological change, and knowledge. Computer modeling and simulation is a methodology to use for capturing this emergent behavior in a knowledge economy.

The overall objective of the book

In management science there is a need for methodological development to increase interaction, to overcome the retrospectiveness of conventional methods, and to include more variables. The returning issue is that business processes are inherently iterative. The book aims to demonstrate the validity and applicability of computer modelling and simulation for business research. It is for researchers and professionals who want to learn about the advances that computer modelling and simulations bring into management science.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Computer modelling and simulation of business processes, e.g.:

-         Innovation/new product development

-         Organizational learning

-         Marketing/sales

-         Logistics

-         Business management

Computer modeling and simulation of business networks

Computer modeling and simulation of value chain behavior

Computer modeling and simulation of markets

Computer modeling and simulation of industries

Agent-based social simulations of business processes

Computer modeled scenarios of business processes

Comparison of different research methods with computer modeling and/or simulations

           Computational intelligence and business processes

Submission procedure

Researchers are invited to submit on or before January 31, 2007, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by March 7, 2007 about the status of their proposal and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 30, 2007. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group, Inc., www.idea-group.com, publisher of the Idea Group Publishing, Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing and Idea Group Reference imprints, in 2008.
