We've tried to apply directly in the past, but weren't accepted
(presumably, because
we're a GNU entity). However, I asked if we should keep applying
directly, or go straight with GNU and was told there's no harm in
applying directly.

I think this makes sense--even if we still all get umbrella'd under GNU,
this reminds the GSoC admins that we are, in fact, separate projects
and, more importantly, how many of us there are.

So of course your procedure is still correct, I just think this is a great way
to raise awareness of the actual strength of all of GNU.
