Looks like you've made some progress.

I would start by cleaning up your X session. Anything Gnome or Compiz related should be removed from your stump X session (on Ubuntu looks like it's in .xsession, .xsessionrc, or .Xsession)

That would help clean up a lot of those errors. You said that it looked like stumpwm loaded for about 10 seconds. It looks like you got things compiled...

For this error: Xlib:  extension "XFree86-Misc" missing on display ":0.0"
Try adding "extmod" to your "Module" section of xorg.conf (
