I use clisp, too, with the timout set to 1 second. It doesn't updated
the mode-line exactly every second when the system is under load, but
more than 3 seconds without an update don't happen.
Maybe you should post your configs regarding the mode-line.
Before I switched to clisp I used sbcl (first with threads and then
without) and the updating worked, too.
