I think, not really a reason for this. Some have made this with pointers,

I've noticed that in header files whose names end in base.h
all the HWPort's are direct members.
In the other MCU headers, the HWPort's have pointers to them.
Is there a reason for this?
The sole exception seems to be portx in at8515.h .
I'd say make them all static instances.
'Twould eliminate some unneeded indirection.
I'm pretty sure they can all be initialized in the pre-body
portions of the constructors of the classes that use them.
