ftp script does not work

Hi,
many of you said to create an autoftp.bat file and run
it. its
content:
ftp -ivn %1
user %2 %3
.
.


i tired with 
autoftp root mypass
i even hardcoded the root and mypass in it and still
did not work.
it either asked for user id and password or it gave
the next 
c prompt or something.

could osmeone help.
i am using NT trying to fetch something from
unix/sol2.8.
