This is my $PS1:
address@hidden;\e\\\]${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)address@hidden:\w\$
I use a freshly cloned screen.
I have figured out the issue.
Adding this to screenrc:
bind c screen bash
caused new windows to exhibt this strange behavior.
