###### ORIGINAL SUBMISSION DETAILS ######

Full Name:

Free Entity Relationship and Reverse Eng

Type:

Description:
------------
Ferret is the Free Entity Relationship and Reverse Engineering Tool. It is
a Data Modeler based on the Entity\Relationship paradigm. It mainly clones
(and improve) the functionality of Computer Associates's ERwin program.

Ferret provides a visual editor for construct both entity\relationship
diagrams and relational schemes. There is support for reverse engineering on
ER-model<->Relational-scheme.

The preliminary webpage is at
http://es.gnu.org/~jemarch/ferret/project/what.html

You can checkout the sources from:

     :ext:address@hidden:/cvsroot/gerwin

module `gerwin-devel' (please see below for an explanation of why it is a
nongnu package and the `gerwin' issue).

Other Software Required:
------------------------
Ferret link with the tcl and tk libraries in order to build the GUI and
provide support for extensibility.

It also link with the expat library in order to parse XML.

Other Comments:
---------------
Ferret was formerly known as GerWin and hosted on
http//www.nongnu.org/gerwin/project/what.html. I received an email from
Computer Associates (owner of the privative suite ERwin) claiming that they
could sue me due to trademark violation (Gerwin = G+ERwin). I discussed the
issue with both RMS and Eben, and the conclusion was to 1) to change the name
from GerWin to another one (Ferret) and 2) to make Ferret a GNU package.

So Ferret was already dubbed as a GNU package by RMS.
