This bug has been fixed and pushed
<http://git.savannah.nongnu.org/cgit/reproduce.git/commit/?id=723e813e> to the
main repo.

I tested it on the Debian system that caused the initial problem, and it was
fixed (the `./configure' script went all the way to the end without any
crash).
