I can’t remember where I read it, but I believe the only current solution is to perform the backup to a local drive/folder first. Then copy that whole backup directory over to your target server (using rsync or ftp or something). From that point on, you should be able to perform incremental backups targeting your remote server.

Subject: [rdiff-backup-users] Restart a sync with a TMP

Hi everybody,
I have a questions but i havent found the answer in the archive of the mailing list.
If the first time i backup a Big file (for exemple 100MB) the copy stop during the transfer, the next time i start a sync, rdiff will restart the entire copy of the file, even if the TMP file is quiet similar to the real file (for exemple 90MB)...is there any way to tell rdiff to restart where it stop and to not restart the whole copy?
Thanks a lot
