It would have been something about permission denied.

The problem was the order in which rdiff-backup changed the permission
of directories.  For instance, for a non-root user to restore a file
that was in a directory with permissions of 0555, rdiff-backup has to
make it with 0700 or similar, then put everything in it, then change
it to 0555 as it leaves.  In certain cases rdiff-backup would write
the final permissions to the directory too soon.
