I was in the process of adding this when I realized that important
temp dir is on the destination side, but that in theory a user could
specify two different temp dirs, one for the source and one for the
destination.

Anyway I think this is a tricky option, and want to avoid
responsibility for any confusions.  So just use the TMPDIR environment
variable; that's probably good enough.
