Are you sure it's trying to write to your etc/fstab?  An excluded file
is equivalent to one that doesn't exist.  So rdiff-backup will try to
remove those excluded files from the mirror directory, which will fail
if you made those files immutable.  Perhaps you outsmarted yourself?
