There might of course be other reasons for it not working as well.
Did <ctrl+t><t> really work?
Are you for example using a xterm without allowing SendEvents to it?
Try:
echo 'XTerm*allowSendEvents: true'|xrdb -merge
...and see if it fixes the problem, if not - what terminal emulator are
you using? Does it work with any other? rxvt? gnome-terminal?
