Cool, I hadn't noticed that =)
I also found that using the echo command with some external commands
made the bar too wide, and with a NE bargravity the bar was pushed off
the left-hand side of the screen. This isn't too helpful: you just get
to see the ends of the long lines. (I know, I could use cut to snip
the output, but it seems messy: how do you know where to cut for the
current font?).
