I usually execute "xterm -fn 7x13" when in contact with solaris boxes.
That's an argument to the xterm in debian, (i use that locally and
solaris only remote) it changes the font size to one gives less than 163
columns on my 1024x768 screen.
Another work around is to write "stty cols 163" before starting vi.
