x32 is an ABI, not a difference in the CPU. QEMU shouldn't
need any special support for it to work in system mode at all.
It's likely that something else is going wrong.

​Thanks all for your helpful pointers and advice. I found the issue -- I was telling q​emu to use the wrong kernel, it didn't have support for X32 compiled in. Oops!

All is working now.​
