On closer testing, this patch breaks the semihosting test suite:
$

qemu: uncaught target signal 11 (Segmentation fault) - core dumped
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
so I'm unqueueing the first 4 patches (but have kept the
misc unrelated other fixes).
