I have been rejoicing too early: Slackware seems incompatible with libiconv - it uses Glibc's iconv instead, and libiconv itself will not compile. Is there any solution other than changing distro? Would it be possible to implement a --without-iconv or --without-libiconv option?
Thanks for your patience

So now I'm confused. What confiure is rejecting works fine if you run is manually.

See what happens if you run this:
./configure gl_cv_header_wchar_h_correct_inline=yes
