Follow-up Comment #11, patch #6358 (project pspp):

If the text importer sees a field with some confusing data
in it, it asks the user to choose the format manually. I think this is good,
but it should make the default format 'String'. That way,
the user won't have to change as many of the formats manually: 'String' is
likely to be the most common non-numeric format, and by  the time the user
sees that format-changing window, the variables in question will not have
numeric format anyway.
