Yes, it requires root to install Plash fully, I'm afraid (see  It's possible to run
Plash without using the chroot jail, for testing purposes, but that
doesn't provide any security.

The component that needs to be installed as root is quite small so it
might be easier to persuade a sysadmin to install that than install
all of Plash.

I have some plans to use ptrace() instead of chroot jails (see, which would work from an
privileged user account, but that won't be done in the near future.
