What version of autoconf/automake do you use? It works for me with:
automake (GNU automake) 1.7.2
Autoconf version 2.13
I had 1.4.19-4 installed. It works with 1.5, but the package is called automake1.5 not automake, which is why I didn't have this version running.

I can install libxml2-dev if I use the testing/unstable Debian distribution, but I need to update libc6 from 2.2.x to 2.3.x. Do you think all my currently-installed packages will still work if I do this?
