The purpose of the generate_makefile.pl was to help in the generation
of the makefiles in the data/ directories. Adding new files manually
resulted in quite a pain (I simply forgot it every time). It doesn't
have necesarry to be hooked up into the makefiles, it could be ok to
have it as a seperate programm which one needs to run once after
adding an image.
If I am not mistaken subdirectory support via a single Makefile is
still broken in automake1.6, IIRC it failed at creating the directory
hierachie at install time which forces us to use a gazillion of
Makefiles.
